Discriminatory Ticket Pricing Policy Legal Challenge

A disabled customer has won a legal battle over “discriminatory” ticket pricing policies at his local theatre.

The case was brought because Mr Paulley from York was asked to pay double for his ticket just because of his disability. Like many disabled people attending events he relies on a carer accompanying him but the York Barbican Theatre charged him for two tickets – one for himself and one for his carer.

The case was settled out of court when the theatre operators admitted they discriminated against a disabled customer with their ticket pricing policy. They have now changed their policy so that a disabled person and their carer no longer have to pay more than the cost of a full ticket. The outcome is expected to have an impact on many venues across the UK – including theatres, music and sport.
