Joy as Wrexham's viewing platform for wheelchair users opens for the first time

It was an evening to remember at the Racecourse Ground as Wrexham's state of the art viewing platform for wheelchair users was in use for the first time. As the team ran out 3-1 winners over Torquay United, there were smiles all round as supporters got a first class view of the action from the first of 3 planned platforms to be delivered in partnership between Wrexham DSA, the club and Glyndwr University.

Stephen Gilbert, Secretary of Wrexham DSA summed up the joy of seeing the platform in use for the first time, "It was a fantastic feeling to see everybody gather on the platform, everybody was so happy and very impressed - the whole DSA committee were ecstatic to see part one up and running."

He acknowledged however that they will not rest on their laurels and outlined the determination to deliver platforms 2 & 3 in the future to further increase the capacity for wheelchair users at the ground.

"As soon as I sat back in my regular seat for the match, I found myself thinking of platforms 2 & 3. We've created a lovely problem for ourselves in how we manage getting everyone who wants to use the platform a fair turn."

"We still have 45 seats, plus companions, at ground level but if it rains folks get wet."

"This just makes me more determined to get the other platforms up and running giving as many people as possible the opportunities the choice of view that is very much needed."

There was also a fine demonstration of the appetite there is for improved access and inclusion at our football stadia with a bucket collection drawing many generous donations to support the further 2 platforms at the ground. Members of the DSA were also greeted with warm applause as they made their way round the pitch during the half time interval.

Level Playing Field congratulate all those who have made this project possible, and look forward to seeing the planned future developments take shape in making the Racecourse Ground a truly accessible and inclusive stadium for all.
