The launch of Accessible Stadia Second Edition will take place at Hill Dickinson Stadium, on Wednesday 25 November.
Opened in 2025, in addition to being the home of Premier League side Everton, the stadium has also hosted international football, rugby league and rugby union. It is therefore a well-suited setting for discussions on the future of accessibility across sports.
More than two decades after the publication of the original 2003 document, Accessible Stadia Second Edition sets the new standards for the provision of accessible experiences when attending live sport. It instructs venue operators, governing bodies, designers and others involved in stadium development on how to deliver accessible matchdays for disabled fans.
Representatives from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Sports Grounds Safety Authority will come together with their counterparts from governing bodies, disabled supporters’ associations, clubs and venues across the country. Individual disabled fans, designers and industry experts in sport and disability will also be present at the event.
Registration is now open, with the launch free to attend and scheduled to take place 2-4pm. Beyond an introduction to Accessible Stadia Second Edition, fan-focused and expert-led panel discussions will explore the practical impact of accessible design and inclusion across sports stadia.
Chair of Level Playing Field, Tony Taylor, said: “We are delighted to have taken the lead on the major rewrite of Accessible Stadia, and we now look forward to sharing it with everyone, presenting a significant contribution to making live sport truly accessible.
“Beyond updated standards, the new documentation has a broader scope than its predecessor and has had extensive input through multiple phases of consultation.
“The team at Level Playing Field is extremely grateful to all of the disabled spectators, disabled supporters’ associations, disability charities, accessibility experts and other organisations who fed into the process. Across the sports industry, vital insight was provided by staff at clubs and venues, designers and governing bodies.
“I would also like to express our thanks to Everton, for hosting us on this important day for disabled fans and inclusion.”
Further details will be provided to those who register, in advance of the launch. Spaces at the event are limited and anyone signed up beyond the capacity will be added to a waiting list.
