The British Institute of Learning Disabilities (Bild) delivered a presentation during a Level Playing Field session for staff at sports clubs and venues across the country.
Bild is a national charity that, for 50 years, has protected and supported the rights of people with learning disabilities.
Bild’s Learning Disability Advisor, Kate Brackley and Programme Lead for Health Inequalities and Coproduction, Lindsey Allen, spoke about the experiences of fans with learning disabilities and looked at ways to make events more inclusive.
Brackley said: “I’m very pleased to have done this presentation.
“We collected lots of feedback as part of a survey that I created that we sent out to other organisations. I’m feeling rather pleased that we were able to present our results to the Level Playing Field team.”
Allen added: “It’s great that sports clubs want to hear from people with learning disabilities about how they can improve access for this important customer group.
“This is a topic close to my heart, as I really enjoy attending the football with my brother, who is a season ticket holder at Fratton Park!”
The online session was part of a regular series, where Level Playing Field brings disability access officers and other staff in similar roles together, to focus on specific topics and share best practice.
Level Playing Field Head of Club Relations and Development, Daniel Townley, said: “We were very grateful to Kate and Lindsey, for presenting to our network of staff across a range of clubs and venues.
“The perspectives they shared helped educate attendees on the lived experiences of many supporters. This accompanied a solutions-based approach to addressing barriers and delivering access.”
