Level Playing Field welcome Manchester United decision to ban supporter who posted derogatory messages towards disabled fans on social media

Manchester United have banned a supporter for 3 years after posting derogatory remarks concerning disabled supporters in response to the club’s plans to expand Old Trafford’s provisions for disabled supporters to meet Accessible Stadia criteria. This means that some United fans will be relocated to accommodate new wheelchair user spaces around the ground.

Level Playing Field Chair, Tony Taylor said: “Level Playing Field welcome Manchester United’s swift and decisive action to ban a supporter who made derogatory comments towards disabled fans on social media. The comments were made following the club announcing plans to upgrade the accessible facilities at Old Trafford meaning some season ticket holders will be relocated. We stand against all forms of discrimination against disabled people which when unchallenged reinforces negative attitudes and stereotypes, and to this end we are pleased that Manchester United have acted accordingly and shown a no tolerance approach towards disability discrimination and abuse.”
