New sports strategy launched in December 2015

The Government launched its new sports strategy on 17 December 2015 – Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation.

The report includes a number of significant recommendations and steps regarding the value of watching live sports and accessible stadia for disabled sports fans.

Highlights include the following:

  • Football clubs get a specific mention in being expected to provide accessible facilities and services.

  • SGSA to take a more proactive role. “Government will enable the Sports Grounds Safety Authority to take on a more formal role in helping sport grounds reach the required standards for accessibility.”

  • Sports governing bodies to ensure the employment of disabled people and to seek their appointment to leadership roles.
